Images and Thoughts

November 29, 2009

I love this soulfood resteraunt that sits right on the corner of Morningside avenue in Harlem. It has been seen in movies such as “Precious”, and Hype Willimas movie “Belly”. It has been a staple in Harlem for ages, and sadly it’s doors has closed. My great aunt [Grandmother's sister] lives right around the corner from this landmark, and I’ve never gotten the opportunity to eat there, or go inside. Hopefully someone will re-open it, and I’ll get the opportunity.

Album Covers I Love- Uncle Jam Wants You [Funkadelic]

November 10, 2009

Funkadelic_-_Uncle_Jam_Wants_You_-_1979

I‘ve always wished I could hop in a time machine, and see a P-Funk concert back in the 70’s. I am totally obsessed with Parliament-Funkadelic and I also love the cover art on their albums. Uncle Jam Wants You has always been my favorite cover. It’s almost impossible for me to keep a straight face when I see this. George Clinton was never afraid to go there, and still isn’t. Today you can’t find this kind of funky innovation anymore. Long live the funk!

Mother’s Finest

November 10, 2009

When it comes to Funk/Rock, nobody does it better than Mother’s Finest. Started in Atlanta, Georgis in the early 70’s by Joyce Kennedy MF proved that Black folks could rock the house just as good as anyone else. Their Live album is one of my Favorites. Melissa Morgan did a remake of “love Changes” but her version cannot compare Joyce’s powerful rendition! I could listen to this all day!

  1. Somebody to love
  2. Fire
  3. Mickey’s Monkey
  4. Give you all the love
  5. baby Love
  6. Magic carpet ride
  7. Love changes
  8. Watch my stylin’
  9. Don’t wanna come back

Uptown Juice bar

October 27, 2009

uptown-juice-barHarlem was a wonderful place to grow up, and an even more wonderful place to get your grub-on. The Uptown Juice Bar, is one of my favorite spots. It’s small, but the food is big on flavor, and strictly vegetarian.

It’s a buffet style spot, and the rice and beans, plantains, and collard greens are to die for. If your even in New York, take a trip Uptown, and check it out.

Lawd, I have seen it all!

October 20, 2009

blackdevildoll

I was online looking for some information on black folks in Horror movies. I came across this cool site called BlackHorrormovies.com, and it has quickly become one of my favorite sites. While crusing around, I came across this movie; Black Devil Doll. I’m telling you, I’ve seen some wild shit in my day, but I have to say that this left me speechless! I checked out a few clips on youtube, and I don’t even have the stomach to post them! I took one look at this, and it made me go WTF? The movie is like a cross between “Child’s Play” and Blaxploitation movies from back in the day. The spirit of a radical militant inhabits the body of this doll, and starts slashin’ chicks! The poster alone leaves my mouth hanging open! This was actually released on DVD in August of this year. Miss Badass is at a loss for words!

I Love Prince’s suit!

October 16, 2009

SWITZERLAND MONTREUX JAZZ FESTIVAL

I‘ve been all blogged out for the past few days, and I’ve also been on that damn Master Cleanse diet, so I haven’t been writing consistantly, but I did want to comment on Prince’s suit @ the Montreal Jazz Festival in Switzerland back in 2007. I love the hell out of this suit!, The color, the fit, everything is just perfect. I would rock that hat too! This lil’ black man can do no wrong in my book! He’s such a treat, so I was wondering WTF he was wearing recently at the Fendi fashion show in Paris with his new girlfriend Bria!

PrinceFendi1

I love Prince liked cooked food, but that necklace is scary as hell! It wouldn’t hurt if he put a little meat on his bones too! Prince has always been known for his unique style as far as his wardrobe in concerned, but I just don’t get this one. I love the color, but that necklace looks like it could cut somebody if he hugged you!

Meshell

Speaking of little funksters my girl Meshell Ndegeocello dropped a new joint on the October 6th. A huge shout-out to my fellow twitter friend Supernegress who tweeted about Meshell’s remake of “Let me love you down” by Ready for the world. I used to be on top of what’s happening in the realm of black/funk/rock/alt music, but since having Aneksi I’ve kind of fallen off. I’ve been so busy dealing with a demanding toddler that I’m not up on whats going on! I listened to some snippets on Amazon.com, and bought it immedietly. It reminds me alot of The world has made me the man of my dreams, that was released in 2007. I’ve been a huge fan of Meshell’s since minute one, so this was a huge treat for me. Like I’ve stated in the past, I don’t listen to the radio any more, so it’s usually through word of mouth  that I find out about new and interesting music.

Waist Deep

October 4, 2009

poster_WaistDeepPoster

I’d like to give a shout-out to my Friend Randy from Harlem, who always hooks me up with Urban goodies from his huge movie collection. I didn’t have anything to watch over this weekend since I haven’t re-started my Netflix subscription, and randy gave me a few things to check out. Waist Deep was something I rolled my eyes at the moment I looked at the cover, but I have to admit, I actually enjoyed this movie.

Directed by Vondie Curtis Hall [ Director of "Gridlock'd" and god forgive him, "Glitter"] Waist Deep is the story of ex-con O2 [Played by singer Tyrese] who is trying to get his life together, and lands himself a job as a security guard. O2’s cousin Lucky [Played by Larenz Tate, who is incredibly talneted no matter what he's in] didn’t pick up O2’s son Junior [Played sweetly by Henry Hunter Hall, Vondie's son] so O2 leaves wwork early to pick up his baby boy. While Junior takes a nap in the back seat, O2 is distracted by coco, a sexy street hustler played by Meagon Good, during this encounter O2’s car is jacked with lil man in the back seat, and all hell breaks loose!

O2 and Coco join forces to get junior back from the clutches of a drug king-pin played by the Game [What? did you expect him to be playing a damn lawyer?!] The movie has the usual violence and action, but Tyrese is actually likable  as the concerned dad who will stop at nothing until his son is back. Meagon is, well..meagon, with the usual pouty lipped thing she does, and that confused look she always has on her face! Kimora Lee Simmons has a small part as a ghetto queen who sells stolen Gucci, Prada, and other hot items from her home.  I get a kick out of Kimora. She’s really over the top, and actaully quit funny.

So if you have nothing else to watch on a weekend, or a late night, I’d say check this out!

Blacula!

October 4, 2009

With Halloween slowly approaching, I could not resist including a clip of Blacula to my badass blog. I remember seeing this on television as a little girl, and being scared shitless by the ending when he burns under the sun’s rays, and all you see is a damn skull! The 70’s were truly a magical time for black folks! I simply cannot get enough of this!

Joi- Star Kitty’s Revenge

September 25, 2009

star_kittys_revenge

I L-o-v-e me some Joi and Star Kitty’s revenge  is one of those gems that you may miss if your not looking closely. I’ve pretty much given up on the radio, so I find myself listening to stuff in my music collection. If Prince were a girl [no smart comments please! ha!] he would be joi. I love black women who aren’t afraid to spread their wings and step outside of the damn box, and Joi is definitely one of those women. She released her fourth cd “Tennesse Slim is the Bomb” in March of 2006. It was originally supposed to be released on Raphael Saadiq’s Pookie record label, but their were some problems, and Joi released it on her own label. Oh, and can somebody please tell me why Raphael named his label pookie??? What the hell is that all about?

Never 2 Big [and never 2 awful either!]

September 20, 2009

Never too big

I’ve been meaning to blog about this little flick for sometime now. It was originally titled “Butter”, and I actually saw it on cable for the first time. It was one of those movies that was so bad, it’s good, and I picked it up at a discount bin  at Kiss Electronics in Harlem! Never too big is the story of a dude named freddy [played by Shemar Moore] Who is the brother of R&B singer Bluesette [played by Sally Richardson]. blues is signed to 8ball records which is owned by 8ball [how original is that?, played by Ernie Hudson], bluesette is mysteriously found dead in her bathtub, and I guess ya’ll can figure out the rest!

Nia Long is also in the film playing Shemar’s love interest, and Terrence Howard as freddy’s childhood friend who’s now a cop. I’m kind of getting tired of Terrence playing that same ‘ol role. he does this I’m-a-old-school-pimp thing that’s down right annoying! Is this flick Oscar worthy? hell naw! But it’s fun to watch, and Shemar has no talent!
